It is one of the most common problems of dog adopters and those who despair the most. Being able to go for a walk in Zen mode, our dog always manages to go out in “I drag you” mode and the walks become serious nightmares. On the one hand, because we always have to be tensing and scolding the dog and, on the other hand, because the dog is also tense by having to strain to drag you and even damage your neck. How to avoid this situation? How to get our dog to walk without pulling?

If we want to enjoy a ride without belt pulling we must take into account several factors:

  • The dog's collar. It is important not to use the common collars that surround the dog's neck because we can seriously injure him. Instead, bet on harnesses, either those who pick up the torso or better called Easy walk.
  • The dog leash. The strap should always be short, discard the flexis from now on. With the extendable leashes we will never be able to educate a dog to walk without pulls, because the dog has already associated that that rope can be lengthened more, which will cause the opposite that we want, which is to always pull more of the leash to try to make it lengthen as has happened many times. Therefore, we must always use a short strap.
  • The education of the dog to walk. Have you ever applied any technique to educate your dog to walk on a leash? Most adopters embark on the adventure, and usually make the usual mistakes: pulling the dog hard each time the dog pulls (this causes the opposite effect, which is pulling more), constantly scolding the dog (the bad roll it makes the animal more nervous), etc. Even if it costs you, you have to rewind and start from scratch with the dog to re-educate him for a walk. Follow the following tips:
    • Leave the house with the harness and a short leash for your dog and a prize bag (dog treats).
    • Once in the street, be very patient and you see with the idea that you are not going to walk but to train with your dog, to teach you how to walk, so calmly, you start the walk with your dog with the strained belt, never tenses If your dog tenses, it doesn't matter, but you keep the leash tense, and the first time the dog advances you, stop dead and turn around inviting the dog to follow you. In that same moment he follows you, you give him a prize, reinforcing this behavior.
    • Repeat this exercise as many times as necessary. No matter that day does not learn, you do not give up. The important thing is that you modify the behavior of your dog, rewarding all the times that it follows you and changing the course or simply staying still if it advances you.
    • Also use your body to slow its trajectory in case you want to overtake it. If he stays still and does not try to pass you, he also rewards this behavior and starts the walk to where you want.
    • Perform this exercise every day in short sessions, so that the dog is focused and learning is more effective.
  • Your attitude is a fundamental pillar. Dogs learn faster and more effectively if they are in a fun and relaxed environment. Even if you despair during the walk, when you practice these tips, focus on having a positive and loving attitude towards your dog. Do not lose your patience and reinforce the things you do well through prizes, and at the end, do it with caresses and compliments to strengthen that bond between them.

Things you should not do

Before starting to train our dog, we must take into account a series of behaviors that we must avoid if we want our faithful friend's learning to be satisfactory:

  • If your dog performs any exercise incorrectly, you should never yell at him or fight him, much less hit him. It is counterproductive for training.
  • Do not use choking necklaces. In addition to causing harm to the dog, it is a very cruel training practice that can be substituted> This is one of the first “tricks” that are usually taught when training begins. It is a very simple exercise that dogs usually learn very quickly. To perform the exercise you must stand in front of your dog and hold a prize treat between your fingers. Next, bring the candy to your snout. When the dog is going to lift its head to catch the treat, it will make a movement similar to sitting down the hindquarters. You must say "sit”(Or the voice command you choose) while lowering the hand of the treat to get the dog to follow the movement and feel. If the exercise is not completed correctly you should not give the reward. Repeating this many times, you will end up associating the word “sit” with which you should sit.

How to teach our dog to lie down

This exercise should be taught when the dog dominates the exercise of sitting, since it is an extension of this one. To perform the exercise, we will take a treat between our fingers and give the order to sit down. Once it has been seated, we will place the candy in front of its snout and we will gradually approach it towards us and lowering the hand towards the ground. When the dog is about to lie down, we must give the voice order we have chosen and we will reward him with the treat when he lies down.

How to teach our dog to kick

This is one of the favorite tricks of many people who decide to train their dog and can be a good exercise to finish or start any training session. To carry it out we must hide a treat in our fist. If you want me to give you the right leg, place the fist with the treat near your left side of the face. If you want the other leg, the fist should be placed on the right side of the dog's face. Let your dog try to get the treat by its own means, since it is normal to try to open your hand with its paw. Once you do this, give the voice command and open your hand to reward it.

How to train a puppy to go when we call it

To practice this exercise we must do it progressively. First we will move away a little from our dog (a few meters), we will hold a treat in our hand and give the voice command to come. When you come to our call we will give you the treat. Once we have trained enough and get the dog to come to us being separated only a few meters, we must gradually increase the distance. We must be very careful with the voice order we give our dog to come to the call. It is common in this type of exercise to mix the order with the name of the dog. If you decide to say "Come + his name" is correct, but always try to use the same voice command.

How to train a dog to walk without pulling the leash

To perform this exercise, if your dog is very energetic, you should look for a time when you are as calm as possible, since it is not usually simple. If our friend is nervous, upset, or very active, it will be better to leave it for another time. For this exercise you need to have a few goodies on hand. The steps to follow are those:

Tie your dog with the leash, take it with one hand and hold a treat with the other. Stand next to your dog and say the voice command you have chosen> Practice these routines on a regular basis and you will see how it is becoming easier to teach him new things.
